news — phase 1 of project with 32 apartments for Nester in Echt (NL)
Construction of Heerweg homes in Echt begins
On May 12 and 13, nine homes and a shared ‘living room’ were installed at the construction site on Heerweg in Echt. With this project, housing corporation Nester and PSW, an organization for people with an intellectual disability or support needs, are realizing suitable living space for people who require guidance with independent living.
From installation to completion in one day
The homes were constructed using prefabricated construction. Production of the homes started in March at the Skilpod factory. Barely two months later, the apartments were placed at the construction site and assembled into a two-story apartment complex. With the reaching of the highest point on May 13, construction work on the first phase of the project is nearly complete. Under the watchful eye of future residents and staff, the final elements were hoisted into place.
Self-directed living with support nearby
Starting in August, PSW residents with a mild intellectual disability will move into the homes. Each resident has their own apartment, which contributes to independence and self-determination. The nine residences are all two-room apartments.
In addition, there is a shared living area used as a living room where residents can meet, engage in activities together, and further enhance the residents' independence. At night, residents can rely on the support of the adjacent PSW residential support center. Support staff will also be present in the morning and evening.
Living in the neighborhood
Danielle Driessen, Team Leader for Housing at PSW, explains: “PSW consciously chooses housing forms right in the middle of the neighborhood. This way, residents are truly part of society. They are in contact with neighbors, have work and/or daytime activities nearby. They live independently, have self-determination, and support and guidance are close at hand where needed.” Suitable housing
Harrie Oosterlee, Managing Director of Nester, explains: “With these homes, we are realizing high-quality and suitable housing that aligns well with the needs of this target group.” Rapid realization through prefab. Franky Depoortere, General Director of Skilpod, adds: "By cleverly combining industrialization and prefab production, we can realize housing projects like this in the short term. Together with Nester and PSW, we are thus creating sustainable housing solutions with social added value.”
Second phase to follow
The project on the Heerweg is being realized in two phases and consists of a total of 32 residential units. In addition to the 9 homes, there will be 20 youth homes and 2 single-family homes. Full completion is scheduled for the spring of 2027.
